Cusco For Foodies

Peru has so much more to offer for those visiting from around the world besides just the stunning views of Machu Picchu. At the top of the extensive list of unique experiences is the food and some of the most talented chefs. Lima, Peru has earned the title by many of being the new culinary capital of the world making Peru a foodie’s dream destination. Although I did not get the chance to visit the capital city, I was able to get a glimpse of what all the buzz was about in Cusco, and I was certainly not disappointed! Here’s some places you can’t miss during your visit to Cusco:

Jack’s Cafe

I loved this little breakfast spot so much that I visited a second time before my stay was over. The cappucinos are rich and served in the most adorable ceramic mugs. I also really enjoyed their French toast sticks!

Baco

This restaurant had a really pleasant vibe to it that made me feel at ease and assured me that I had chosen a good spot for my first dinner in Cusco. That night the restaurant was offering complimentary cheese, bread & olive dishes which I happily accepted. I ordered the prawns and calamari to start and the dish had a really unique and fresh flavor to it. I also decided to try the soft alpaca meat. It was a great decision because they grill the meat and serve it with

Cicciolini

The great reviews for this place is what influenced my decision to stop here for lunch while exploring the city. The decor on the inside was beautiful and unique. Although it was busy I was able bypass the wait by agreeing to take the last available seat at the bar (perks of traveling solo). I ordered the grilled octopus as a starter which ended up being one of my favorite dishes during my visit. I also ordered the gnocchi which was delicious as well.

La Bodega

After a long day of wandering the streets of Cusco I stopped here for some much needed carbs. I ordered myself a glass of white wine and the tagliatelle pomodoro. I felt I also deserved something sweet after all that walking. I left feeling very satisfied and ready get warm and cozy back at my airbnb for the night.

Inconto

After a long journey back from Aguas Cliente and Machu Picchu, I chose to eat at this Italian restaurant. I ordered the polpette to start and the “saltimbocca” which was chicken breast stuffed with prosciutto and Andean cheese, served with creamy fettuccini.

Papacho’s

I highly recommend trying an alpaca burger at some point during your stay in Cusco. As seen in the picture above, it looks just like any other burger. However, the meat seemed much leaner, as if it were somewhere in-between a turkey burger and regular ground beef burger. The flavor was only slightly different than a traditional burger.

While visiting Cusco I unfortunately did not try “cuy”, a traditional delicacy dating back to Incan times. For those who don’t know what that is, cuy is fried or roasted guinea pig. I personally could not get past the way it was served (google it if you dare) but if you are feeling adventurous  there are plenty of restaurants that serve it.
